Paul's comments remind me of a workshop I attended with Mike White,
former mayor of Cleveland. In the audience someone bemoaned the fact
that parents didn't really care about their kids' education.
Mike asked her where she lived. She identified a suburb. He then asked a
series of questions:
Did you hear any gun shots last night?
Any drug deal go down on the corner last night?
Gangs roaming the neighborhood?
Strange people hanging out giving children too much attention?
How many jobs do you have?
Any trouble paying your bills?
He went on to say, the people in such neighborhoods were some of the
most caring mothers and fathers he knows; they were highly engaged in
the lives of their children, it was just that the importance of homework
tended to fall behind keeping their children alive.
