Paul, would you please give a few citations from that "load of studies". I
am a state preschool teacher with mostly hispanic immigrant kids and my
directive is to be teaching them almost entirely in English, while also
"respecting" their native tongue -- which I am able to do because I am
blessed with an excellent assistant instructor from Mexico who is bilingual.
I'd like to see some good arguments from research bases that the kids need
to learn to READ in their native language prior to reading in English, if
that is also what you are saying is best for them.
thanks much.

Tom,
No. Absolutely no. There are loads of studies on this that are very, very
clear: Students cannot learn a second language effectively if they are not
fully literature in their first language. And by the way, not being
literature doesn't mean the can't speak their first language or communicate
with it. So your question, "What is the point of translating subjects into
another language the child does not understand?," demonstrates an important
lack of understanding

If a student is not literate in his own language, then we may as well begin
teaching him in English, no? What is the point of translating subjects into
another language the child does not understand? Of course, verbal
translation is another issue. Many students might benefit from hearing
subjects in their mother-tongue, even if they are unable to read it.

Many english language learners are not literate in their native lanugauge.
How does the state and the city expect students to progress if they have
trouble understanding their own language? What is your position on this?

Hello.
As list administrator, I've noticed that over the last week or so several
new folks have subscribed to MCP and then began asking some very basic,
simple questions. I've also noticed most of these new folks have been very
resistant to any transformative or critical vision for multicultural
education. (I also noticed that every one of you uses a Hotmail account,
which is either a coincidence or a bit odd.)
So my question: Did you all join this discussion group as a requirement for
a class? Can you do what many folks do when they enter the conversation and
give us a little context about where you're from, why you're interested in a
conversation about multicultural education, and so on?
