Many families are moving from many different countries. Why haven't the United States created a curriculum that would help many of the students who do not speak english? We should make them feel as comfortable as possible when they come to the United States. As educators, we need to become more familiar with their cultures.

"Melting Pot" has traditionally been *misinterpreted* as meaning that all cultures from foreign countries would melt together into one. However, the main focus was on deculturalizing foreigners and forcing them to accept the culture of WASPS....if they wanted to gain access to opportunites to improve themselves.
So it was never about melting several cultures into one.

I was born and raised in Malaysia. I grew up speaking three Chinese dialects and three other languages (Malay, English, and Indonesian). Most Malaysians speak at least two languages. Our nation is not divided because of this. In fact, because of this, we're all more accepting of one another and respectful of other cultures that are different from ours. Many European countries have more than one official language. Why couldn't things be the same here in the U.S.? Why does it have to be a melting pot and not a salad bowl?
