thank you for clarifying for me, i better understand and agree with what you are saying. you are right, i haven't been here long. (I don't know his name).
But thankfully, *whiteness* courses are springing up all over the nation.

My blood lineage is predominantly Irish, German, and French, with Irish dominating. Anecdotally, people will tell you I have many of the stereotypical traits ascribed to the Irish.John is NOT saying that such awarenesses, even identities, do not exist. He is saying that my routine interaction with other members of society is dominated by my whiteness, which I understand to be the norm, which requires no examination, and is superior to other people. Implicit in that statement is the renunciation of culture - that is, I do not relate to you, or anyone else, as an X-American, I do so as a white person, with all of the privileges inherent therein.Bill BraunJennifer DeNet wrote:
I think you need to be careful because it sounds like you are making a statement that is true of all white people, I would agree with your statement if you said some white people see culture as something everybody else has but them. Also, how are you defining culture, or how do you believe said whites define culture if they claim not to have it?

Quite true re "lenses," explicitly because whites see culture as something everybody else has but them.John L. Sun, 25 Feb 2007 11:19:36 -0500I'm not sure that we educators make a conscious effort to impose our personal views, values, mores upon our students; rather we bring our perceptions, personal experiences and how we view issues through our lenses.I have made a conscious effort to encourage my students NOT to impose their personal views upon participants of programs that my student facilitate because I do not see that as an effective facilitator that encourages dialog and thought surrounding any issues relating to diversity. group: Do you think that some teachers consciously imposetheir culture, in turns of belief, attitutes and values on their students in hopes that the students would begin to think that the teachers beliefs, attitues and values are better?D.Scott________________________________
