Hi Paul (and everyone),
My initial response to this message was, "Only ten?!" There are many,
many books which I have found to be useful to my work, but here is my
short-list:
1) "Elusive Culture: Schooling, Race and Identity in Global Times"
(Daniel A. Yon; SUNY Press, 2000)
2) "Race, Identity, and Representation in Education" (Cameron McCarthy &
Warren Crichlow, Eds.; Routledge, 1993)
3) "Race, Identity, and Representation in Education (2nd ed.)" (Cameron
McCarthy, Warren Crichlow, Greg Dimitriadis & Nadine Dolby, Eds.;
Routledge, 2005)
4) "Making and Molding Identity in Schools: Student Narratives on Race,
Gender, and Academic Engagement" (Ann Locke Davidson; SUNY Press, 1996)
5) "Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning" (David Theo
Goldberg; Blackwell Publishers, 1993)
6) "Race and Ethnic Relations in Canada" (Peter Li, Ed.; Oxford
University Press, 1999)
7) "The Uses of Culture: Education and the Limits of Ethnic Affiliation
(Cameron McCarthy; Routledge, 1998)
8) "Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today's Feminism" (Daisy
Hernandez & Bushra Rehman, Eds.; Seal Press, 2002)
9) "Pedagogies of Difference: Rethinking Education for Social Change"
(Peter Trifonas, Ed.; RoutledgeFalmer, 2003)
10) "The RoutledgeFalmer Reader in Multicultural Education" (David
Gillborn & Gloria Ladson-Billings, Eds.; RoutledgeFalmer, 2004)
In terms of fiction, for adults, may I recommend "Msungu Jim and the Great
Chief Tuloko" and "Twelve Bar Blues", both of which are by Patrick Neate.
For children (ages 12 - 15), Harriets Daughter, by M. Nourbese Phillip
is an excellent book.

themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer
